CFD / FEA simulations and LDA / PIV measurements

Numerical methods and laboratory measurements became indispensable in the modern mechanical engineering environment envolved in the design of advanced, modern equipment and applications. APEX Group relies heavily on modern software packages built on FEA/FEM and FVM for CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics) flow simulations and for FEA (Finite Element Analysis) for stress analysis of structures. Laboratory measurements are made with advanced laser equipment (LDA/PIV).


CFD software packages are used for flow simulation of complete systems in which our equipment and systems are incorporated. Nowadays equipment may nolonger be designed in isolation. CFD simulations detect dead-flow corners, flow separation area, flow acceleration/decelaration, etc. impossible to detect by "classical" design methods.

FEA software packages are used for simulation of the metallic structures formed by the equipment and its associated support components and ductwork. The simulation covers static and dynamic (typically seismic) loading, according to the code imposed by the project specifications.

LDA(Laser Doppler Anemometry) is the most accurate technique of measuring the conditions of the fluid flow inside transparent models made of e.g. transparent plastics or glass. The measurement, point-wise, is made with 2D and 3D laser-beam systems. All flow parameters, e.g 3D-velocities, turbulence level, time fluctuations, etc. are processed by a specialized software.

PIV(Particle Image Velocimetry) is an extention of the LDA by photographing flow characteristics in complete planes using special laser plane screening and special, high frequency, photo cameras.
